What are commissions?

Commissioned artworks (or simply "commissions") are artworks that are made-to-order or custom-made for a specific client.

"To commission an artwork" means "to give an order for or authorize the production of" (Google); "to request the creation of a piece" (Wikipedia); "to hire an artist to create an artwork based on the client's request" (Artacacia).

Why commission an artwork?

Some artworks need to be customized to fit client specifications, such as, the size of the space that the artwork needs to fill, the theme of the place (minimalist, beach theme, black and white, nature, etc), the purpose (anniversary gift, Mother’s day or Father’s day gift, a dog portrait, and others), the budget (some clients like some of my big originals but the budget fits a small version), a remake (the original painting has been sold but the client wants his/her own version), or for any other reason. One thing sure about commissions, it’s personalized for you. :)

How long does it take to finish a commission?

Commissions may take about 1-2 weeks (for small pieces), 1-2 months (for big pieces), or more for bulk orders.

This may be adjusted based on the artist’s line up of commissions and other projects.

Either way, the timeline will be confirmed after the commission details have been finalized and agreed upon by the client and artist.

Why does it take that long?

While the actual painting may only take hours or days, there’s so much more involved in the process. Here’s an easy analogy.

Artwork commissions are like made-to-order clothes (eg. wedding attire). The client shares the vision, the artist lays out design options, the client confirms the design, the parties discuss the rate and agrees on the details, the artist purchases the materials, the artist starts the order, the client fits the outfit, the artist adjusts the outfit, the client checks the outfit again, and once approved by the client, the artist does finishing touches before packing and shipping the order.

How much is it to commission an artwork?

Minimum standard rate is Php25++ per square inch and is adjusted based on the design, size and other details.
